As Artificial Intelligence continues to create transformative solutions in every aspect of human endeavors. It has also seen an increasing adoption in Critical Infrastructure Systems (CIS). However, this adoption has also made these CIS vulnerable to cyber attacks, physical attacks, and overall failures. As threat actors capitalize on AI in attacking systems, Security experts need to leverage AI to mitigate AI risk and to keep their systems running.
In April 2024, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), in coordination with its Cybersecurity Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), published a Safety and Security Guide for Critical Infrastructure Owners and Operators. This guideline addresses cross-sector AI risks impacting the safety of the United States Critical Infrastructures.
The three (3) major categories of system-level risk this guideline covers include:
- Attacks using AI
- Attacks Targeting AI Systems
- Failures in AI Design and Implementation
It is stated in this guide that for owners and operators of Critical Infrastructure Systems in the US, whose essential services and functions its citizens depend on daily, mitigating AI risks is not merely an operational need but a national security and public safety imperative.
