Researchers from the University of the Republic of Uruguay have discovered a new way hackers could spy on computer screens using artificial intelligence (AI). This method, called Deep-TEMPEST, works by capturing and interpreting invisible electromagnetic signals that leak from HDMI cables.
This technique of intercepting and interpreting HDMI signals allows potential hackers to see what’s displayed on a computer monitor from a distance, without needing physical access to the device. It’s more accurate than previous methods and can work from several meters away, even through walls.
This research work aims to recast the problem as an inverse problem and train a deep learning module to map the observed electromagnetic signal back to the displayed image.
